This is the first in a series of boxes that have been designed as sturdy stand alone containers, insert receptacles for decorative origami wraps, or bases for pretty lids made from a different pattern.

As of today, there are ten different boxes in the Basic Boxes Series. Each has a different feature. I will post details of each as I complete the diagramming and instructions.

The first in the series was designed to have very strong ends.

This makes it a good insert for the Crossover Box that I posted about on this blog some time ago. That decorative wrap requires some downward force on the top during the final part of its construction. The original box tended to collapse which resulted in a couple of us origami enthusiasts coming up with some modifications to accommodate this. This is an additional one.

I will come back to this box in later months as I have designed other variations.

All variations of the box can be squashed flat. This means that it can be sent through the mail, put in a pocket or transported in a purse or a binder for later reconstruction.

The simplest version is made from construction paper (12" x 9" --> 8 x 6 grid) or other material with a 4:3 ratio. This version has a single layer floor.

If you use construction paper I would recommend using high end heavy duty fade resistant alternatives. These fold much better than the cheaper versions.

The more complex versions of the pattern, made from square paper or generic oblongs, have a double layer floor.

Here are the Crease Patterns for the three versions. I recommend making the simple 8 x 6 grid one first as the others require that you pull out the second layer of floor from the side walls, and then lock the model by folding over the end walls underneath this layer.
This item was designed for 24lb American Letter sized paper and meant to hold a standard American sized check.

The pattern can also be used with A4 paper, Construction Paper (typically 9 inches by 12 inches) and sturdy (kraft-based) gift wrap cut to an appropriate size.

This is a very easy pattern and is suitable for beginners, just as long as they are comfortable making a couple of "about here" folds when bringing in the side flaps and they can turn back a flap so that the gap between it and the crease it is lined up with is just a little over the thickness of the paper.
Over the years I have had many requests for diagrams and instructions to fold the wallet that is pictured on the Header for this site. Well all that whinging has finally paid off. Yesterday I uploaded PDF instruction files for this Wallet Pouch and the simpler Catera Wallet to my ETSY shop. You can find a link to that shop on the side bar.
One of my customers has already succeeded in folding the Catera Wallet and sent this lovely photo. Well done, maohare!

After a long break, dealing with health and other personal issues, "Creative Creasings" is back on active duty again.

As usual, new models displayed on these pages will be accompanied by a basic crease pattern image for which there is, of course, no charge. That is my continuing gift to the expert origami community. Not everyone can make these items from this sparse information, especially when the construction is less than straight forward. Many of you have asked for detailed instructions but, as you know, these are quite time consuming to prepare, and sometimes fiendishly difficult to illustrate in a flat 2-D format. I have, however, been working on this task. I expect it will take a couple of years before I can diagram every model that I have posted here, but I have managed to make some progress, especially on my newer models.

The first batch of fully illustrated and diagrammed instructions are now available. You will find them at my new ETSY shop (Berry Goodies) where you can download them almost instantly. Just click on the ETSY button in the side panel to the left of this text box.

This will cost you a token amount that will help cover some of the expenses
involved in developing models, photographing them, diagramming them,
listing them on ETSY and, of course, the cost of maintaining an active
internet connection. Some of them (like the 48 page booklet on Diamond Lock letter folds) are quite a bargain compared with comparable material sold on Amazon. When I have more models available I will start to offer pick-and-choose combinations that will let you make your own book with just the designs you prefer for a lot less than it costs to buy the designs individually.

I began the process by diagramming my Letter Fold Series of which there are 20 distinct types. All the Instant Downloads available on the Berry Goodies site (except for the Free Gift) are from this series. So far, just under half of them have been uploaded. The rest will be arrive on the site as they are completed. Then I will begin work on other and older models.

Here is a LIST OF AVAILABLE ORIGAMI INSTRUCTIONS at Berry Goodies right now. Enjoy!

This Letter Fold is a little more complicated than the previous collection. I would not recommend it for beginners. There are a lot of steps, some squash folds, sinks, pushes, reverse folds and refolds . Trying to remember how to fold them without prompts led to a lot of mistakes and a lot of frustration.

I made quite a few models along the way, mostly because I kept mangling
the paper while trying to recall how I had folded it before. It didn't
help that I had made a couple of models with the creases marked in
colored pencil and the folds reinforced so that (at least
theoretically) they models should refold themselves. Ha ha, not funny.

It took me two days (or was it three) to make a set of Step Folds . I actually got the Step Folds wrong the first time around (the colors were the wrong way around on one of the ends). I had to redo them today.

Once you get the hang of it the model only takes about ten to fifteen minutes to fold. The first attempt with unfamiliar instructions will take longer.

There are couple of tricks-of-the-trade that I will teach in classes that are too complicated to put into diagrammed instructions. They create greater accuracy and neater folds. If you are an old folder you will figure them out for yourself.

The model ends up as a long pleated strip that is connected together at
the ends. The two ends are connected across the center line and covered
by the diamonds in the center of the "bow". The pleated ring is squashed flat so that the decoration is mid center. It will stay flat provided that you are using ordinary weight writing paper rather than wallpaper or thick paper, both of which try to bounce back into a ring shape. Warning: the model is not suitable for cheap letter head paper which will crack and tear. This goes for cheap wrapping paper that will also crack.

The only part of the writing surface that is visible is the part that makes the outer part of the bows.

The model is connected together in two different ways.

There are a couple of triangles
on the back of the decoration. A single layer triangle is fitted
inside a double layer triangle, which is then bent down. The triangles that you can see at the tip of the models below is the double "female" triangle. The tab (male) triangle (not shown here) is on the other end or the paper strip.

The model is further
secured with a couple of tabs that are pushed between the layers of the double
triangle. The connection is fairly secure but still comes apart fairly easily when gently pulled.

You may agree that the end result is worth all the effort

There are a number of variations. Here is a sample of what can be done with the end that has the decorative center part on it. There are other variations not shown here, including a set of hearts in the middle.

Some of these variations are easier to undo quickly than others. Bear that in mind
when deciding which one to use for your special friend. You don't want a
letter fold than looks good but is ripped open because the reader
cannot figure out how to pull it apart quickly.

I am not going to bother providing the Crease Pattern for this model. Unless you are of the caliber of Robert Lang you will not be able to figure out what to do with it. So if you want to fold this model you
will just have to wait until I finish the diagrammed instructions. I'll let you know
when that happens. It will not be tomorrow and maybe not even next week. I anticipate having to do a fair bit of hand drawing in order to make the tricky parts clear. Be patient.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00265673638659855406noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6643015343899511462.post-35866087852796670172012-10-31T23:42:00.001-07:002012-10-31T23:50:03.767-07:00WALLET LETTER FOLD

Today we continue with more letter folds.

I've called this one the Wallet Letter Fold because it has similarities to one of my origami wallets. Unlike the real wallet, this fold does not have sides; it is for letters only.

The model is based on squares with sides that are equivalent to a quarter of the width of the paper. There are two rows of these at the "bottom" of the sheet, and two rows of them at the "top" of the sheet. The creases that don't fit this pattern (marked in orange and green instead of red and blue) are made in the last couple of steps when the model is folded in half. They occur because, as you may have figured out by now, you are working with paper that is rectangular and not the traditional origami square.

To help you figure out how this folds up, here is a diagram from my instruction sheet (which will you will be able to buy from my Etsy Shop very, very soon).

You are not restricted to using standard letter sheets or letter head. You can use any sheet of paper that has at least one side that you can write, print or draw on. The examples shown at the beginning of this entry show letterhead paper (left), sturdy wrapping paper (not the thin stuff that crumples and cracks) (top) and wallpaper - the kind that is not pre-pasted and is crisp enough to hold a crease (right).

Nor are you restricted to writing letters on your carefully folded sheets. You can use these letter folds for paper that contains recipes, instructions, poems, drawings, paintings, music manuscript, graphs, formulae, puzzles, and so much more. Be
creative!
These letter folds are almost identical. They have different additional crease patterns with the easier version having a lot more of them.

Here is the easier version (Type One).

The angled flaps are derived by folding a diagonal from the edges of the outside columns and then reflecting a marker crease from the orthogonal direction.

And here is the cleaner but slightly more difficult version (Type Two).

This time the angled flaps are derived from diagonals that are creased between sections that are an eighth of the overall height or width. To that end the pre-creasing divides the sheet into eight in both directions.

Since publishing this blog I discovered that this design was first invented by Romie Halabaso
from the Philippines. The diagrams and crease pattern do not appear to be in the public domain so I cannot tell whether our patterns are identical or not.
This model has two versions with a couple of slightly different folding methods for the first one. They look very similar and they are all simple to fold.

The main difference is in the the length and angle of the offset flaps, and the secondary difference is the pattern of crease marks on the front and back of the folded letter.

VERSION ONE (Wide offset flaps).

This version has flaps that come more than half way across their quarter square. The front of the letter has additional creases on the diagonals but none on the back.

This alternative crease pattern has a slightly different way of deriving the creases for the tuck-under flaps. The result looks the same from the front but there is an X crease pattern on the back. It is only minimally easier to fold.

Take your pick. Use whatever floats your boat.

This is the easiest version to fold. The flap is exactly half of the width of its square and the slope is therefore steeper than Version 1. The detraction is that it has a busier pattern of creased squares on the front.

This is a plain and simple fold. It lends itself well to letter head
paper with a contrasting border which becomes the focal point of the
folding.

It looks like a standard oblong envelope. It it were
not for the diagonal edges, that could catch on sorting machinery, you
could send this letter fold through the standard mail system.

If you really want to do this then I suggest that you pack it inside a standard envelope.

Alternatively you could make a transparent one with Gorilla Glue and clear Grafix Dura-Lar, Dura-Lar
is an acetate alternative that holds a crease, unlike many other
plastic type materials. Unlike acetate, it does not crack, tear or
chip. It is wonderful stuff for origami enthusiasts. If you live in the
United States, you can buy small amounts from Dick Blick stores or
larger amounts directly from the Grafix web site. I imagine there are
similar materials available in other countries.

Pre-crease you model before folding. Then follow the directions for
collapsing it. If you start where indicated you will have a much easier
time tucking the last corner under the adjacent folds.

There are few more tricks which improve accuracy and ease of folding. These are shared in the full set of diagrammed instructions which is now ready. If you are a seasoned folder you will most likely discover them for yourself as you try out the model.
This letter fold is not a quick and easy one. It will take you several minutes and involve you in some folds that require accuracy to work well. The effect, however, is rather good. Use it for that special person that you want to impress.

The front view is on the left of this page while the back view is on the right.

The brown paper that I have used to demonstrate the model here is the same basic color on both sides. The front differs by having a
slight shine, some green leaves in one corner and dark brown edges.
It does not give a good indication of how the model will look with paper that has a different color on both sides.

A large section of the "back side" of the paper is apparent (on the back of the model.) The only part of the "front side" of the paper that shows is the border areas. Write on the colored side of the paper for this model, leaving wide margins.

I have included a few instructions and explanations on the CP. It is not particularly intuitive, however. I am working on the diagrams.

Fold from the colored side.

Start with the horizontal and vertical creases on the mid-line. Divide the model in 4 equal sections lengthwise. Turn the end corners over to make creases. You will need these later.
Use the folded corners to make a crease that will give you an edge column on the short side that is the same width as the edge column on the long side. Use this crease as a marker to make the diagonals that will be your outside edges on the completed model. Leave folded.

Hold the flaps down firmly and refold the edge column through both layers. Accuracy is very important here.

You should now have two creases that define the edge of the central column that consists of the paper that is in excess of the perfect square formed by the side pieces. Fold these creases to the center line, making a crease between them: valley, mountain, central, mountain, valley folds. Collapse the central column. Leave the locking creases for later or you will probably be tempted to crease them at 45 degrees. Don't. This will result in excess bulk during the next steps and make it difficult to make a flat model rather than a strained one.

Now we start the final collapse. Turn over the outside edges (which will lock your central column well enough). Just fold the corners flat at this point. Fold the corners to the center of the model, one at a time. Crease from the center point to the outer edge, not the other way around. The want those corners to meet in the middle.

You have now made enough creases to make the lock folds accurately. You can unfold the model and put these in at this stage, if you want. They make the overturned corners on the back of the model look neater. However, they make the model hard to open quickly, which is what you generally want to do with letters.

Having done that (or not) fold the edges over again and bring the corners to the center. Now make the corner flaps into windmill ends. (Collapse on the lines in the diagram if you are unsure how to do this.) Two of these flaps will rest on the central column so that the ends can be tucked under it. Pick one and tuck the end firmly under the central column. Folding clockwise, place the adjacent corner over the top of the one you just tucked under the column. Fold the next corner over this one and tuck its flap firmly under the central column also. Thread the final corner under the flap you first folded.

That's it. If you want to make your model stay really flat, place a slightly damp cloth over the top and iron through this. That should fix it.

Open it up. Write a nice note to a friend or lover, refold, and send or deliver the letter.

(It this is as clear as dishwater you may want to purchase the
diagrammed instructions for a couple of dollars after I've finished them
and posted them on my Ori-Berry-Gami shop on ETSY.) It will be up and
running in a few more days

VARIATION ONE.

The model works for A4 but the fold over flaps are fairly small. This variation provides longer flaps, and looks a little more like a windmill.

The folding is the same except for the way in which the corner edges are folded. Consult the crease pattern to see where the creases are and what your reference points are. After you've done one the others will be easy. After you fold the long diagonal line the shorter line will appear by magic as soon as you flatten the corner.

Collapse the front as before. This time you will have a larger flap to tuck under the central column which will make it more secure.

Here is the crease pattern for this one. Note the differences.

OTHER VARIATIONS.

This is another very easy model. All it requires are a few cupboard folds, a hem and some corner bending. Then it gets folded in half and one end gets pushed under the hem of the other. Easy!

The crease that makes the model look like a roof is made by running a nail over the top sheet of paper to accent the outline of the end that has been pushed under it: a triangle with a flat top.

Usually the paper does not push all the way in so you get a little ridge at the bottom. Think of it as roof spouting!

The samples are made with American Letter sized paper but the pattern should work with A4 and probably with slightly different sized rectangles.

Here is the Crease Pattern for this model. This will help you create a letter fold with the colored side out and the gable roof end in white. If you want to reverse this and make one with the colored side accented at the top, then start folding with the colored side up.

If you cannot see the crease marks easily on patterned paper then fold most of the model from the white side and then reverse the creases before you do the final fold and tuck the ends together.

Enjoy.

This letter fold is really very easy. The only tricky bit is pushing the last flap under the adjacent one.

It should be reasonably clear how to fold this from the crease pattern but here are some hints.

Divide the paper into four equal columns in both directions.

During the cupboard folds you will use to get the outer creases fold over the corners as indicated. Unless you are using very thin paper it helps the collapse process if you don't fold the corners quite to their marker creases. Leave a slight gap so that the paper does not buckle when you fold the sides in during the final collapse.

Open the whole thing up and start collapsing by refolding in a clockwise direction.

With this crease pattern in this orientation start collapsing by folding over the right hand column. Then refold the corner crease. Next fold over the bottom panel. Then fold over the corner crease. Fold over the left hand column and then refold its corner. Folding the upper panel over is a little tricky because it has to go under the right hand column and a mountain crease has to be flattened. The final fold is tucking under the last corner.

The Double Diamond Letter Fold is really quite easy to fold although it may look deceptively difficult. Here is the crease pattern.

The marker creases, shown in grey on this diagram, add to the charm of the model so there is no need to make them soft.
I tried out the Ribbon Bow Letter Fold on an A4 sheet

And a sheet of American Legal sized paper.

Both of these paper sizes works well with this model. The longer the paper, the longer the straight section at the end of the bow "loops". I particularly like the effect with the legal sized paper which is the one to use if you want to write a looooonnnnng one sheet letter to a friend or lover.
Today's letter fold is shaped like a bow made from ribbon, so I have called it the Ribbon Bow Letter Fold.

It can be made plainly, or it can be made with accented creases so that it looks a little more interesting.

The Crease Pattern is shown on a cupboard folded sheet of American Letter sized paper since the preceding folds are simply preparatory for the main ones and a standard raw crease pattern is unnecessarily complex.

Make your final fold in the middle of the space between the bases of the small and large triangles, as marked on the pattern.

The bow will also work with A4 and American Legal sized sheets, in which case and you will get more shaping on the "loop"sections.

Enjoy!
The letter fold in the last posting was shown with a heart poked in the front pocket.

Here are some samples of the version I have been using.

I have long been a fan of Edwin Young's Broken-Mended Heart. http://faculty.purchase.edu/jeanine.meyer/origami/oriheart.htm

The problem with Young's original version is that it cannot be viewed from two sides. Sinking the folds means that the two sides come apart rather too easily. I have modified Young's model so that these problems are resolved.

Here is a Crease Pattern incorporating these changes.

Here are some hints on how to fold the relevant modifications.
The tabs shown in Step 6 are pushed into the corresponding pockets on the opposite side when the model is collapsed. This stops the model from coming apart easily.

The tabs shown in the last steps are tucked into pockets on the top of the heart. This method shapes the heart so that it appears more natural at both stages of the breaking and mending process. Young's version looks oddly flattened on one of the two positions.

These diagrams are taken from my full length Instruction PDF which will shortly be on sale at my new ETSI Shop. I will post a link to that site when it is up and running.

ETSI
does not provide an electronic down load function. Purchased items have
to be physically emailed at some point after the seller gets the
information from ETSI. That can take hours to days. Other options
require a Web Page but, as I have already mentioned, our server is
crashing and needs replacing with a more reliable model. We intend to get around the problem by writing (and testing) a script that will email the purchased items instantly.

It should take about a week to iron out all the problems. From that point expect to see a LOT of diagrams suddenly become available for items that have been featured on this Blog, and a whole lot of other creations that has not been mentioned.

This letter fold has two parts. Part One is the letter fold itself.
Part Two is my variation of Edwin Young's Broken-Mended Heart.

Here is Part One.

This model is quite easy in both its concept and the folding required.

We start by folding the paper in half lengthwise. We make diagonals starting from the center (you will need to make a marker crease here). Then we roll the model up from both sides. The remaining flaps are tucked into each side. The top flap has a little bit of extra fiddling so that it looks right and so that we get a tab to pull to start the letter unfolding. It's pretty secure until you do that.

You can slot anything you like in the front pocket. I choose the Young heart (with a few modifications to make it two sides and secure) because its construction allows it to be slotted over the edge of the pocket for effect. This will stay put provided you don't turn it upside down or knock it. Put the heart in the pocket for safe keeping while transporting the letter.

I have completed diagrams for this model and for my modified Young heart. I have also completed diagrammed instructions for the Double Wrap model. I will make them available just as soon as our crashing web page host machine is upgraded. That might be a month or two. I'll keep you posted.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00265673638659855406noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6643015343899511462.post-70195580755248019822012-10-08T22:11:00.000-07:002012-10-11T00:20:13.195-07:00HEXAGON LETTER FOLD
This Letter Fold is based on a hexagonal coaster design that is in the public domain. There are, however, a few modifications that are required in order to make it work as an interesting letter fold for American Letter and A4 sheets. (Yes, this model works for international sized paper, too.)

The standard methods that origami enthusiasts use to make a hexagon from a rectangular sheet
assume that the folder will cut off the excess paper and just fold up the hexagon. A letter sheet or some other rectangle is commonly used and the folding it begun from one end of the sheet. These Letter Fold versions start in the
center of the paper. The means that the excess paper is evenly distributed at the top
and the bottom of the rectangular sheet after the basic hexagon shape is derived. We do not cut it off.

BASIC FULL COLORED VERSION

The basic full color version displays the colored side of the letter
head paper and tucks the extra-hexagon parts inside the
model. For this reason, it works best with the thinner versions of
letter head paper.
The orange sample shows the front (on the left) and the back (on the right) of a model using the basic method with the addition of extra creases (mid side to opposite mid side) between all sides. If you make these pronounced it will allow the model to be used as a spinner. The message inside could be something like "You make my world go around".

Here is the crease patterns for the Full Colored Spinner Version. The additional creases are marked in orange (mountain) and lime green (valley). Smart people (= you) can probably figure out how to add them without referring to the Crease Pattern.
COLOR BLOCK VERSIONS

If the model is folded up from the colored side, instead of from the white side, we get a model that displays the colored edges. This "waste" paper becomes a decorative feature instead of being hidden inside the model. This is the recommended model if you want to write on the letter head side of the paper rather than the white (or other colored) side.
The first example (mauve and white) uses American Letter sized Letterhead paper (8.5 inches x 11 inches), the second (orange and purple) uses duo-color sided construction paper (9 inches x 12 inches) and the last example (yellow and white) uses construction paper that has been cropped to an A4 ratio (8.5 inches x 12 inches). The "white" tips get progressively smaller as the length of the paper increases in relation to its width.

Here is the Crease Pattern. It's the same as the All Color version in reverse. If your paper is strongly patterned on the Letter Head side (which is not very usual for such paper) then you will find it easier to do all your preliminary folding on the white side; the crease lines are easier to see. It is relatively easy to reverse the crease direction prior to folding up the model into the coaster shape with the colored side of the paper up.

Of course, there is a Spinner Version of this variety also. We just add some well creased additional creases connecting the mid points of opposite sides. That's not nearly as difficult as the Crease Pattern makes it look. We mountain fold between the hexagon's section boundaries and valley fold between the mid points of the opposing sides. Look at the pictures for clarification.
FULLY DIAGRAMMED INSTRUCTIONS.

I have provided the basic crease patterns here but I am in the process of
putting the finishing touches to fully diagrammed instructions. They will be available for purchase when they are completed. The cost will be quite small (so you can all afford it) but it will help provide the
essentials that I need to complete diagrams of other models
show-cased on this Blog. As you are probably aware, good diagramming takes quite a bit of time to do properly.

Here is a sample of what you will get.
I made time to try out the Double Wrap Letter Fold with a sheet of A4. As I suspected, using this sized paper requires a little modification to make the model work. After crumpling several sheets I found a set of creases that works.

Here is the result. I didn't have any letterhead paper so I used some colored pencils to make it clear where the colored (letterhead) side or the paper shows on the outside of the folded model.

It looks a little different, both front and back, but the general idea is the same.

The down side is that there is less room on the inside to write your letter. When the paper is in the normal longitudinal orientation, the top and bottom margins are rather wide.

Here is the Crease Pattern.

The last (optional) crease is no longer required.

The method for finding the long side walls has changed. To make the model work you need a crease at the 7/32nd mark. On the right side of the pattern I have shown how this is done. Follow the numbers. To get the number 5 crease just match a long side to the "4" line on the other side of the mid-line.

Enjoy.

This post continues the Letter Fold Series.

Once again, the pattern is designed for American Letter sized paper. This one may have to be modified slightly for A4 paper. (I have been too busy designing other models to try this out yet. Some of you people that use "normal" (international) sized paper will probably beat me to it. Please share.

The Double Wrap Letterfold is unusual in that the paper tucks in on both the front and the back sides. First we collapse the front, then we bend the flaps around to the back and, after a few minor adjustments, tuck them under each other in a clockwise direction. But I'm getting ahead of the folding procedure here.

There is a fair bit of pre-creasing but I won't apologize because this makes the collapse process relatively painless.

Just so that we are clear, the red unbroken lines are mountain folds and the blue and green broken lines are valley folds. The pattern should be readable after printing it on a black and white printer. Using the standard -..-..-..-..- mountain crease symbol makes it difficult or impossible to unambiguously decipher patterns with small crease lines. Marker creases and those which are not used in the collapse, but are necessary for obtaining essential creases are marked with dotted lines in a pale color - grey if it does not matter whether they are mountain or valley folds and pale blue-green or red-orange if it does matter.

Now we've got the preliminaries out of the way, let's get on with the interesting parts.

Begin by folding the longitudinal marker creases: half, quarter, eighth and finally, two lines on the sixteenth grid. Crease these hard because the rest of the model rests upon them.

Turn paper 90 degrees. Using the 16th creases fold the left side of the paper towards the center and then fold the right side of the paper over it. Turn the model over (colored side up).

Using just the two top layers crease a diagonal as shown. Bend the paper over to make a side wall (and a square). Repeat on the other end. Don't forget to refold the paper or you will get the reflected diagonal on the wrong side. Not good.

Open up the paper and put it colored side down. Re-crease (valley fold) the side walls, making sure that the crease starts at the top of the new diagonals and the center marker fold lines up. This should ensure that you have a square square rather than a sloppy faux one. :-) Do both ends, of course.

With the short sides on the top and the bottom, fold the left and right sides towards the center, as you did when you made the square, but this time it doesn't matter if you start with the left of the right flap because you are going to fold through all layers.

Do not turn the model over (which is what you did last time, right?). Valley crease a diagonal (through all layers) across the central rectangle from the top left to the bottom right. Don't fold the other the diagonal.

Open up. (Colored side is still down.) The central diagonal should be reflected on the sides.

Now refold the diagonal so that it extends from top to bottom. It will not quite intersect the corners. (See the crease pattern.)

O.K. guys, we are nearly to the easy part, because you have all the major creases by now.

You could try collapsing the model, clockwise, using the thick lines around the sides and the central rectangle as the base. However, I recommend creating those green creases first.

To do this, start with the paper, white side up, and short sides at the top and bottom. Got that? Bring the left side towards the center, using the thick red diagonal on that side and the thick blue crease that nearly bisects the corner. The top will start to come down towards the center. Make sure that the right hand side of the top flap lines up with the right hand side of the rest of the paper. Squash the left side out gently. That should make the green crease.

Repeat the process on the other side. This time do not unfold it. You have started the collapse process.

Continue folding down the sides around the base in a clockwise direction. If you creased everything firmly it should be very easy as those thickly marked side creases almost want to fold themselves. Ease out the final diagonal so that you have a four white wings as the picture shows. Only two sides meet in the middle; the other two are offset. The ones that meet along the central diagonal do not reach the sides so that the offset flaps have "tails".

Ta da! You have the front completed.

Bend over the flaps to the back of the model. Turn it over. Now we finish the back.

The two flaps with the white tails are complete. The other two flaps need to be narrowed so that they meet along the diagonal. You will find the lines already there on one side. Re-fold them so that the other side is also creased. Fold any excess paper over the edge, unfold and tuck it between the layers of the point. (You can skip this step but it makes it easier to slot these flaps under the other ones during the final step. It also makes the back look neater by removing any little bits that ruin the nice straight lines of the folded flaps. )

The last bit is easy. Beginning with one of the white tail flaps, fold the flaps towards the center in clockwise direction, one over the other. Tuck the final flap (a pointed one) under its neighbor. And there it is - completed. If you have make one you are happy with then photograph it and send a copy to this Blog. Be famous!

Now unfold the model, write something nice between the crease marks on the white side , fold it back up again and send it to someone you like.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

I will eventually make diagrammed instructions. These are time consuming and I am considering selling them, for a reasonably small amount, to those who can't follow crease patterns and my picture-free verbal instructions.
Here is the next in the Letterfold Series.

This one also uses
American Letter sized paper. That is: 8.5 ins x 11 ins or a ratio of
17 to 22. Once again, this pattern will probably work for A4, but I
have not tried this yet. Could my non-American followers try it out and
provide us with some photos of the finished product, please. Come on,
you know who you are. Now get folding.

PREAMBLE

This is the first post on this Blog for a while.

We are recovering from the effects of a serious IRS mistake. They thought we had earned 3 million dollars in 2000, and took away most of my husband's wages for several years. This resulted in us using up all our savings in order to survive, being evicted from our previous house while I was still recovering from major back surgery (which did a lot of harm), learning how to be lawyers so that we could represent ourselves in a dispute with our ex-landlord (we won), missing two Christmases for lack of cash, dealing with the problems of having to drive unlicensed vehicles to stay alive and managing to avoid bankruptcy due only to the extreme generosity of a couple of people. And of course we had no money to pay a lawyer to fight with the IRS. We eventually told them that our son was on food vouchers and if they milked any more money from us we would die, suicide or become homeless and unemployed - any of which would result in us paying no more money to them. They have backed off. They have all our paperwork (the third copy of these - they lost the first two) but have not yet processed it. That was almost a year ago. Sigh.

I developed a thyroid deficiency problem as a result of the extreme stress and am gradually getting that under control.

On the plus side, our seventeen year old managed to graduate from High School in spite of all the drama and uncertainty. This is particularly amazing because he suffers from Asperger's Syndrome which makes any change stressful, let alone what he has been through for the past few years.

We are rather battered, but we have survived. I am now able to concentrate on origami design once more.

This is the first of several letterfolds that I designed over the past few days. I will deal them out as I complete photogenic models and crease patterns. I aim to complete some diagrammed instructions (time consuming) and teach at least one of the models at the upcoming Berkely Convention. If you are a San Francisco Bay resident then perhaps I will see you there.

BOWTIE LETTERFOLD (AMERICAN LETTER SIZE)

Although this was designed for American Letter sized paper it will probably work for A4 as well. If one of you tries this out please photograph the results and share them, and your comments, with us. I'll post them on this Blog.

Here is the Crease Pattern.

A word of warning. In order to fold this without tears you will need to refold the two vertical valley creases on the short side so that they are temporarily mountain creases.

Push the points of the orange triangles on the long sides to the center to collapse the model.

Then refold those mountain creases back to valley creases.

Push these center flaps so that they are facing along the center in the other direction (90 degree turn). Flatten.

Turn the points under.

Tuck the four flaps in the pockets below (not into) the ears of the white bow tie.

If this is about as clear as brewed coffee then you will just have to wait until I complete the diagramming - or come to the Berkley convention and I'll show you.

Remember: all broken green lines are valley folds and all unbroken orange lines are mountain folds. (Except for the alternating vertical folds on the sides.)

The flower petals are longer and wider. This hides the connecting pieces quite well. On the other hand, this is a difficult model to put together. At first the connections between flowers were folded into pockets on the back/inside of the model. This became more problematic as the model neared completion. The last five folds were folded from and into pockets on the front.Rosemary LYNDALL WEMMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04750975392518510362noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6643015343899511462.post-51057710461055970752010-03-19T06:00:00.001-07:002010-03-19T20:33:27.376-07:00A VARIATION ON THE HEART FLOWER<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 397px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSigo3702RAc4flO3FsciuVjcKGhZKDXM2Q-YQ2adZyG_LZlFAwUjiIh5jM5CB0zvr_Uy4J3bCNl5j52wPhwWSU-G3FKV_vE9QDYSNzNmpziIGnBF7uLY8A9M5UMv2EjXU1koS7UwtKe0q/s400/heart+flower+017_50.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450329312120320114" />
Here is a variation on the heart flower. Unfortunately the item has not been diagrammed yet and the lid section is not an easy component for a near novice folder to fold or to put together.

I informed the reader that many kusudama models an be easily modified to become lanterns and I referred her to a kusudama of Russian origin which featured heart shapes, a theme which seemed appropriate for a wedding.

Contrary to the conventional rules of origami, that model required that the folder make cuts in the paper. I guess this cross between Kirigami (the art of paper cutting) and Origami (the art of paper folding)could be referred to as Kirorigami.

I found myself wondering if the model could be modified so that it was not necessary to make cuts in the paper. So I experimented.

I came up with the following model. It has a number of features which differentiate if from the Russian original, including the fact that it incorporates several pieces into each flower unit and that these units can be connected without glue.

The CP is included for those who can follow such things. The differently colored squares are the same size as the additional pieces required, and in approximately the same position from which they will be folded into the model. The center piece is not folded and simply sliped into the center of the flower. The corner pieces connect the flowers together. One of the photos shows how this is folded. A folded corner is folded together with a corner of the flower. This is held firmly in position when the sides of the heart shape are folded over at the back.

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 380px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGn0SGtnYnDGs9PRiC-yiczUBJVAVrDErpdQrmw5F70bcmZMtA3qpTVQgT-efwIGz5PgGHhVLUJOIHQXDMEQh8v3k5jb7nSlMJZ28X6jsjCB48sGmfqDZ-UZwWEBr_m3I2Wi4TUDm7iKBe/s400/heart+flower+013.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450318708574462994" />

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 368px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwPeWCQWnF4VK2UubTrEO0dd71mX8CZyUb10W58XcUUfCZUFzqesIChSrMSrVYYu3Ma0NWHf68eBsH-M01flnrmOqi-cVnbakZexjqryY8qwLTxyVPewUr5Yyt7ToYqlQFDZkBNUZjcQy2/s400/CP+Heart+Flower+1.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450319271110072274" />Rosemary LYNDALL WEMMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04750975392518510362noreply@blogger.com1
